Indieterria presents The Blinders For The Many Tour

Dear Readers,

Every day in music business is different. But if somebody told us that we would be reporting on a tour to raise funds for a political party during election time last week, we would raise our eyebrows. Music and politics is as old as time itself but UK has not seen rock bands tour to support a political party since New Labour movement or at least since Manics dropped their first album.

Sold out shows!

Well guess what. We do have a tour to raise funds for Labour Party and yes, we are gonna report on it. With details.  Manchester based trio The Blinders (called by musical press to be the most vocal and important band on the scene in the last three decades) hit the road to fund raise, encourage young people to vote and to push for the social change we all desperately need. Ahead of their For The Many Tour the members have issued this statement:

“All of our lives it has felt like politics has worked against us with election after election seemingly serving the interests of a limited few.
For us, the election on the 12th of December, provides a crucial opportunity to elect a Labour government that we truly believe in.
The For the Many Tour is about using our platform to bring people together, influence change and help create a society in which we are a little bit more equal.
We hope to be joined by as many of our friends and like minded individuals as possible.
IF NOT NOW……. THEN WHEN ?”

The band called upon other musicians, spoken word artists and general audience to join them in creating concerts with all the profits going to local Labour Party chapters, often is constituencies with seats that could challenge the status quo. The answer was shift and within few days seven concerts have been set up across the country, with a leading show at O2 Ritz in Manchester with a star line up.

The is still chance to join the initiative and everyone interested, be it a venue, artists or volunteers  can get in touch with the band via a page that has been set up  for the purpose of the tour: https://forthemanytour.com/contact or they can simply send an enquiry to bands email: management@theblindersofficial.com

*** Tour ***

Show#1 – Blackpool

Blackpool was the first show on the tour and we have to say the kick off was amazing. With 6 bands and one poet on the bil, the innauguration of the tour went absolutely perfect. Jordan Allen did a solo show to open up the celebration, Nana White Pepper blew everyone away with their set (and made their manager proud!), Filthy Tricks were mesmerazing and Palava and Scarlet rocked the crowd like category 5 hurricane. Please see their video for proof! Afghan Sand Gand and Patrick T Davies are close friends of the Blinders so it was not a surprise to see them on the bill. Bobby Bentham of Strange Bones (who did a lovely DJ set) and the emerging band Those Fucking Snowflakes (be careful! They are an avalanche!), made the gig a memorable night for equality and diversity. It is worth mentioning that the performances were a little bit delayed. As the running order was getting behind the schedule, the Blinders played before Those Fucking Snowflakes and in a really cool turn of events, they ended up headlining the gig! How cool is that!

Show#2 – Manchester

Manchester was the second show on the tour but the biggest one overall. It was dubbed “Socialist Sunday” and its motto was “For the Manny, Not the Few”. Over 1200 tickets were sold in 3 weeks, 12 bands performed and 10 speakers shared their views with the public. There was a new merch stand with amazing t-shirts saying “The Blinders For The Many Tour”, “Tories Out” and “Union Kicking Ass for The Working Class” (that was presented on stage by Charlie McGough of the Blinders and proved very photogenic).

The show was organized by Kallum Nolan (Rochdale Labour Coulcillor) and Ben Taylor (head of events at Jimmy’s Group). It was streamed online in its entirety by The People’s Assembly.

Poetry:
Mancunian (mosh pit) poet laurate – Karl Hildebrandt spoke at the Ritz just before the Pagans SOH gig and addressed the inequality and social injustice with his poem. The piece is still unentitled and it was written about 4 am on the day of the concert! His poetry is really powerful and resonated with the audience. Due to high demand (many people asked us to add it!) we have teamed with Karl who kindly re-recorded it and you can listen to it below:

The Blinders went on stage exactly at 10:00 pm and the public quickly greeted them with delight. It was another full house for the trio in one year, as they sold out the venue in April during their Columbia Spring tour. Thomas Haywood spoke to the public convincing them to vote Labour and “finally breaking his silence”. During “Berlin Wall” after singing the famous line “Does my vote count for anything at all?”, he felt prompted to add “Yes, it fucking does!” to huge cheers form the audience. The ending of the gig was a real surprise as members of several Manchester bands – Cabbage, Scuttlers, Saytr Play, and Document, joined The Blinders on stage to perform Cabbage’s infamous track “Terrorist Synthesizer” in a obvious jab at conservative mainstream press often calling Jeremy Corbyn a “terrorist symphatizer” because of his peace negotiations with IRA in the early 1990’s.

The party was not over with the lights out at the Ritz. The bands, speakers and many of the audience members moved to the popular night club, The Night People where the good fun continued till early morning. All bar profits were also donated to local Labour North West branch.

Show #3 – Doncaster

The Doncaster show was the second show on the tour to sell out. The Blinders arrived to spread the message of hope and glory (well we exaggerate, but just a tiny bit) to mostly young audience at their favourite hang-out place, aka The Social. It was good to see the band’s family members and friends who came out to greet them. The show was described as sweaty but amazing. Patrick T Davies again provided a spoken word, Jordan Allen played a another solo acoustic gig under the alias of Gordin Alan (A Tribute act) and Wraiths and Tinfoils raised the temperature to boiling levels. The Blinders were a bit delayed (about half an hour due to late start) but played a full set, just without the encore. The fundraiser was a success and a substancial sum will be given to local chapter of Labour Party. Thank you to all who donated and who came out to support the tour. It is greatly appreciated.

Show #4  – London

Fourth show on the tour and the merry machine came to the capitol to deliver an intimate show what was probably the smallest gig on the tour. Fans of four bands filled the venue to the last place and it was another sold out show collecting money for the Labour Party. Seasons has only the capacity of 80 people so the show was really up close-and-personal. Band members climbed the instruments and the bar, sat on the floor, walked among the public and they shouted the lyrics back at them. Several bands from all over the UK came to support the line up (including The Novus from Stourbridge, which makes us super proud). IT felt as being back at the beginning of their career – playing tiny venues with dedicated fans. All for a good cause.

The Stourbridge concert sold out as the first show on the tour, nearly a week before its date! It was the first time The Blinders visited Stourbridge and they did a canvassing session in the morning, despite the heavy rain.

The show started at 6:00 pm with a surprise performance from Ian Marrey who replaced The Humdrum Express (Ian Passey) that was sadly forced to cancel due to an illness.  His 20 minute set was full of classic protest songs but he presented two of his own compositions that were truly appreciated by the crowd. Next was Jess Silk, a young Black Country artist with a powerful voice and true socialist nature. Flares (the youngest band on the bill) were too young to normally enter the brewery but stole the show with their enthusiasm and powerful stage presence. We sneaked with them into the brewery itself for a photo session and we got kicked out in a real punk rock fashion! Rock and roll kids, is not dead at all!

The Novus are fantastic, unstoppable noise/garage machine that flattens everything in its way. The band is exactly in the same spot as The Blinders were just 2 years ago – they are on the brink of becoming the next sensation and the four guys from Stourbridge know it very well. They have everything, catchy songs, great stage presence and a vocalist that gives it all. Look out as the Novus are touring with This Feeling and are making a name for themselves.

The Blinders closed the day with a set that was identical with previous shows. A mix of well known songs (Ramona Flowers, Brave New World) and several new ones (Rage, Something Wicked This Way Comes, 40 Days & 40 Nights) made everyone happy and proved that the Doncaster trio are now a professional band ready to take over the world.

Three speeches delivered throughout the evening belonged to Maggie Dunne from Fuzzbox, Peter Lowe (Labour Councillor) and Mark Roberts (DOXA, Mother’sEarth EXperiment).

Before the show even started, there was a competition going on!

***Come Together, We Need Each Other***

We strongly encourage everyone to get involved and attend one of the shows above, but there is so much more that one can do – even not moving from one`s sofa. We would like to list few ideas – in case you feel powerless. Because you are not.

– No brainer but register to vote. It takes few minutes and it is the most direct and efficient tool in any elections. Take part. Vote. You have time till midnight on Tuesday 26th November.

https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

-Encourage your friends to register. Nothing beats a personal example.

– Give your local party chapter a call – they may need volunteers, canvassers, even people who prepare  letters. A bit of activism goes a long way.

– Share the posters or events for the tour on your socials, stories or chat groups. Inform your friends.

– Print a poster for the tour and put it in your student hall or on a community board (where it is allowed).

– Maybe make leaflets – it`s cheap and very effective.

– Let local press, bloggers or radios know. They are always looking for new stories to tell. Or write an article or blog yourself.

– If you know a venue that could host a gig to raise funds – you don’t even need The Blinders to do your own gig. Team up with few other artists and do it. It is easier than you think. And besides bringing social change it will also give you real skills how to do events. And how to meet new people.  Win -win.
